How to Prepare for your therapy session
Online therapy is much like meeting in person, just from the comfort of your own space. There is no need to do anything complicated to prepare, but a few simple steps can help you get the most from your session.
Find a Comfortable, Private Space
If possible, choose somewhere you feel comfortable and able to speak openly without interruptions. This might be a quiet room at home, your office, or any space where you feel safe and able to focus on yourself for the duration of the session.
Check Your Technology
Before we meet, it can be helpful to make sure your internet connection is working well and that your chosen device is charged and ready to use. The platform I use for connecting to video calls is Google Meet, I use this platform for its simplicity and availability to connect with you via email. If you have not used this before, taking a moment to familiarise yourself with it beforehand can help you feel more relaxed when the session begins.
Give Yourself a Moment to Arrive
There is no right or wrong way to come to therapy. Some people like to spend a few minutes gathering their thoughts beforehand, while others prefer to simply see what comes up in the moment. If it feels helpful, you may wish to make a note of anything you would like to explore during our time together.
Reflect Between Sessions
Many people find it useful to keep a journal or make occasional notes between sessions. This can be a helpful way of reflecting on insights, noticing patterns, or recording thoughts and feelings that arise. However, there is no expectation to do this, what matters most is finding what works best for you.
